Wool Week 2021 (Part 11): Pizza Boy U.S.A.

“Harold has something to show you. Hey, where’s your walkie talkie? Okay, under the counter is all right, as long as you have it switched on. I can’t get George off the scooter, so we’d have to walk back and forth if we needed to get you. It’s okay. He’s having fun. Just make sure you can hear the radio. Now, look carefully before you walk out the door. The scooter, of course.” Beep, beep, beep, beep.
“Eliot sure is a nice boy, isn’t he? I wish I had a brother. Do you ever wish you had a brother?”
“Ha! I may not have a brother, but I have enough cousins to populate a small country. Brighton, you ready to go to lunch? Well, we could visit the other kids first and then eat pizza. You might be hungry by then. Besides, P&E has some really scrumptious-looking things in their window. I might just have to try ‘a sliver of everything’. I don’t remember. Yes, I do. Mabel told me that’s what her grandmother used to say. Anyway, what’s left to do around here?”
“I think everything’s ready for tonight. I just really like being in here when it’s so clean and quiet. It’s nice to have a chance to look around before the crowds get here and everything goes higgledy-piggledy. Oh, look, Nat, Bunty’s got the latest issues of Spin Off magazine. I’m going to put these behind the counter in my stack. Have you seen them yet?”
“I have, and there’s a very good article about– Brighton, move over! I can’t believe my eyes! Bunty has ‘Ida and the Wool Smugglers’. Oh, my! I’ve been looking for this book for years! What? You’ve never read it?! Deprived child . . .”
“I’m hungry. I know, but that was five minutes ago. Now I’m hungry. Hey, girls, why don’t we take a break and finish up this afternoon? The last little touches won’t take us ten minutes to do, and that leaves us an hour or so to shop before we’re open for business. Great, where do you want to go first? P&E it is, then. No, we’d better leave the door open for Bunty. Last one out’s a rotten–” Beep, beep, beep, beep. “Maniac!”
“Just be patient, Bunty. You’ll see in a minute. Hey, boys. Move to the side a bit.”

“Here, Bunty! The first piece is for you . . .”

Oh, Harold! That was amazing! You’re so sweet. Thank you. Mmm, my favorite . . .”

“FREE PIZZA! FREE PIZZA FOR ANYONE WHO LISTENS TO MY ’10 WONDERFUL REASONS TO LOVE WOOL’! Ha! Spoil sports. I was just kidding. Eliot paid for pizza for all the volunteers and made me promise there’d be no strings attached. I was just razzin’ him. Now, if you did just happen to want to hear them again . . . Okay, okay. Help yourselves. I’ve got plenty more coming, so eat as much as you want. And don’t forget your drinks down at Sun-Ho’s. Hey, Sun-Ho! After you get done serving everyone, don’t forget to come over and get some pizza. What? Pi-i-i-zza! Oh, forget it . . . ‘Sun-Ho. Come in, Sun-Ho. Hey, don’t forget your pizza. I know, but they won’t be there long. They’ll be back down here for more food. Okay. Roger wilco. Over and out!’ Boy, these radios sure are handy.”

“Hey, Pete! Mind helping the others to whatever they want, while I go and grab some pizza? Have you seen George lately? I don’t wanna get knocked down by that scooter again. He did?! What a hoot! How far did he have to push it? Guess Eliot should have shown him how to read the gas gauge when he showed him how to use the brakes. Ha! Yep. Back in a minute. Boy, I’m hungry!”

“Hey, girls. When you’re done looking in the shop windows, come on over and grab some lunch.”

“That’s a good idea. I’m kinda sweets-ed out. Let’s get Bethany and Olivia to go with us. We’re passing right by. Hey, Liv!”

“Do you guys wanna go to the diner with us? Eliot paid for pizza for all the volunteers. Okay, so let’s go! Come on, Bethany. But watch out for George. “
